Crappie Fishing Basic Gear

carp reels
by dingatx

Crappie Fishing Basic Gear

There are some bare essentials that every crappie fisher needs: pole, reel (although truly optional I think you will want one), fishing line and a hook. I hope those are somewhat obvious but let us look at the basics first. Crappie poles are generally long, slender poles reaching lengths of 18 feet or longer. I do not recommend a super long pole for someone that is just getting started or not ready for them. Longer poles have their advantages such as reaching into tight areas and also extending your reach from a central point. This is an advantage when employing a technique called spider fishing, using varying length poles you can create a blanket of hooks, often in a semi-circular pattern.

Longer, and often more slender, poles provide amplified sensitivity as well. Most crappie specific poles would be poor poles for catching catfish or large carp. When choosing a pole consider your application such as how are you planning on casting. Long poles work for just dropping a line in the water but slightly shorter poles will help you when bait casting.

If you have a good idea of what you want for a pole you will now need a reel. There are as many reels to chose from as there are crappies, not really but almost. There are three main components of a reel those are a barrel, crank and a guide or eye. There are two types of spinning reels, an open face and closed, these are easily distinguished. If you can see where the line is stored it is open faced if you cannot it is closed faced. Both types also vary greatly in operation, one you must flip the bail back while holding the line and the other uses a simple push button on the back of the reel which is loosely egg shaped. I like the first one because you can see what is happening with your line and the general feel is better. The later is very popular with kids and the very casual fisher.

There are two more types of reels, a bait caster and the fly reel. The later is not extremely popular with crappie fishers but should not be excluded especially in the spring where fly fishing can be a great weapon in your armory. The first reel has been around in some form for hundreds of years and is very popular with bass fishers and for good reason. Theses reels are easy to recognize as they are the only ones where the axis of the barrel, the part that holds the line, is perpendicular to the pole where all others are parallel to the pole like a spinning reel.

Of course there is an exception with the fly reel but the size of the barrel often gives it away. The bait casting reel gives the user the greatest control over the feed of the line and is also one of the most difficult to master. Simple answer for this is pick a reel you can use and become familiar with all of its various adjustments as I’m sure there will be many such as brakes and clutches.

Tips on Lake Fishing for a Great Outdoor Experience

Tips on Lake Fishing for a Great Outdoor Experience

For many years, lake fish have been classified under three general heads: game fish, food fish, and forage or bait fish.

The bass, trout, pike, pickerel, muskellunge, pike perch, etc., have been generally known as game fish because of their sporting value.

On the other hand, carp, suckers, some of the catfish, yellow perch, etc., have been considered as food fish. While this latter group has not been considered as furnishing the sport that the so-called game fish do, nevertheless, it has a real economic and recreational value.

Generally speaking, in lake fishing, words are really inadequate when it comes to describing the correct procedure in casting. The best way to learn how to cast is to go down to the beach, watch an expert at work, and try to do likewise.

Nevertheless, lake fishing can really be fun and the novice will quickly master the correct form in lake fishing. Therefore, to further harness their craft, here are some tips that could help the anglers on their lake fishing activity.

1. In lake fishing, as with other forms of fishing, a smooth, snappy stroke is required but not as snappy as when snapping a whip. This type of stroke will cause the loss of many flies.

2. Anglers should remember that it is the line that is cast, not the fly. The fly is but a passenger, which is attached to the leader.

3. Proper timing is an important factor on both the backcast and forward cast.

4. Know the fish habitat and the kinds of fish that inhabit the lakes. Some of them are the sunfish, and the small mouth black bass.

These kinds of fish can usually be found hiding near some submerged log or stump, or among the plants.

5. When catching big fish in the lake, it is best to use big, sturdy rods. Big fish like the bass usually attain a weight of 12 pounds, which usually inhabits the lake or pond. The reason why they grow really big is that in lakes or ponds, the food is both abundant and very rich.

Hence, to handles these sizes, the ideal length and weight of the rod is 8 ½ feet in length and from 4 to four and three quarters of an ounce in weight.

Indeed, the fundamental principles in lake fishing are not difficult to master and with little patience and practice, the novice can become a successful angler in the lake.

Carp Tackle :: Bait Boats

where to fish carp
by airborneshodan

Carp Tackle :: Bait Boats

I was sat on the bank enjoying a days carp fishing. The weather was good, the water was calm and the bite count was quite productive.

The pond is located in a large private, well hidden area. There are generous coverings of lily pads and other greenery.

About 4 hours into the day, a chap had arrived on the opposite bank. After tackling up and before he cast for the first time, I saw him put what looked like a remote controlled boat.

My first thoughts were ‘How can he think of playing with a remote controlled boat when fishing?’ I was thinking how I could show my objections when he put this boat into the water. He steered it over the area he was about to fish. The boat was very quiet, much quieter than the standard remote controlled boat. It was at that point I realised he must be baiting the fishing area using this device.

I’ve never come across this technique before and was intrigued. I walked around to investigate and I was impressed. It was a bait boat. You stock 2 channels in the top with bait. When you’ve taken the boat to the area you intend to fish, you simply open 2 flaps on the boat which releases the bait into the water.

Simple and marvellous idea. I am thinking of adding this to my collection of carp tackle, although initially I was concerned about the noise level and vibrations, but, after speaking to a few people who uses these, they can be a very useful device.

Are Drug Companies Destroying the U.s. Health Care System?

Are Drug Companies Destroying the U.s. Health Care System?

The U.S. government’s annual bill for healthcare spending – ,925 per person – significantly exceeds that of all other nations. Despite this, our current health care system is increasingly failing both patients and medical practitioners. Of 13 nations, the U.S. is last for neonatal and infant mortality, last for years of potential life lost, 10th for age-adjusted mortality, 11th and 12th for female and male life expectancy respectively. Chronic degenerative diseases – heart disease, cancer, arthritis, obesity, etc. – are at epidemic levels and create the ideal long-term customers to grow the medical industry.

Looking for a culprit? Consider that pharmaceutical company profits are so large they outstrip every other American industry by far. Americans spend over 0 billion on drugs. The drug companies claim that they need large earnings (4,835,595,000 in 1999, for example) to conduct their research, but just one of every five dollars the drug industry collects actually goes to drug research. Some drug companies spend twice as much annually for marketing and advertising. From the years 1996 to 2001, pharmaceutical companies spent billion on consumer advertising. Many of the advertised pharmaceuticals are not (contrary to popular belief) FDA-approved, and the information contained in the advertisements is often misleading and not entirely accurate. Now there is even a new wave of drugs being marketed to alleviate the side effects of other drugs being marketed (e.g. NexiumTM to relieve digestive problems created by pain killers).

Pharmaceutical companies have enormous influence on physicians through the billions of dollars of marketing resources. Drug companies in the U.S. spend, on average, ,000 each year per physician to influence their behavior through subsidizing studies in major journals, aggressive marketing by drug reps (in some instances trained exactly how long to shake a doctor’s hand), advertisements and sponsorship of medical education programs for doctors and medical residents. (Such support of education and science subtly brainwashes physicians into thinking symptom-based medicine is sound knowledge and science as well.) Is it any surprise that two thirds of visits to doctors’ offices result in a drug being prescribed? Some patients may be on numerous medications prescribed by various specialists while not one of them knows, or could even predict, the health consequences of the interactions. (I recently discovered that my elderly mother, suffering from a variety of ailments, including dementia, was on 17 different medications. Not only did she not know what she was taking or when she did, neither did any of her physicians.) Little wonder pharmaceutical toxicity is one of the major factors contributing to medical care being the leading cause of death in the U.S.

[Why Modern Medicine is the Greatest Threat to Health]

http://www.wysong.net/health/hl_884.shtml

Aside from profiteering and marketing, the most fundamental flaw in the system is philosophical. Doctors and pharmaceutical companies think about names of diseases and removal of symptoms, not cure or prevention. They chase, but the race is rigged so they never catch.

Enabling such a system to prosper and flourish is a public that also has a flawed philosophy. They want to live life as they choose, carpe diem, thinking only of momentary relief, pleasure and convenience. When something goes wrong with their health they don’t want instruction on how to change lifestyle, but rather want to use the power of money (preferably the government’s) to buy their way out with a silver drug bullet that immediately takes the problem away. We spend much for dying, little for living.

American health will continue to slip and our economy will continue to be drained by a failing healthcare system until the underlying flawed philosophies are changed. Medicine must change from naming diseases and treating symptoms to prevention and cure. Yes, that means the medical care system should be trying to put itself out of business, not create a growth industry of illness.

On the other hand, people must change by taking the responsibility for controlling their own health destiny. As it stands, the public has become a pawn of commercial medical interests.

Ultimately health is something we do to ourselves, not something others do to us. When that fact is faced, the medical-pharmaceutical complex will shrivel to a cottage industry and the public will be the better for it.

A Guide to Fishing Tackle

by Nigel Jones

A Guide to Fishing Tackle

Are you planning on going fishing for the first time? If you are, then you have walked into any tackle shop or read through a fishing magazine and confused the hell out of yourself. There are thousands of types of fishing tackle you can buy, for all types of fishing, for many different places and it can get a bit overwhelming!

The rod is one of the most important parts of fishing tackle that you can buy. Without one, there is no fishing. A good sized rod will be about 12 or 13 feet in length and should be made from carbon fibre. This will ensure it is durable, and it is long enough to cast correctly but not too long as to scare you! Lighter rods are better than heavier rods, but obviously, the lighter the rod will mean the more expensive, as will better quality rods.

Once you have chosen your rod, the next bit of fishing tackle that you should invest in, is a reel. Generally, rules will come that can be adapted to suit both right and left handed people. It should be of a light weight and preferably with an open face. Again, the better the quality, the more money you will be expected to pay. A spare spool is a good thing to keep handy as well!

Line is a rather difficult part of fishing tackle. A 3Ib or 4Ib line would be better, but you need to choose the line that is appropriate for the type of fishing you wish to divulge in, and also the type of fish you are aiming to catch. Lighter lines will not always suit heavier fish and suchlike.

Floats are an important part of fishing tackle. Floats enable you to see where you have cast as well as, (obviously) floating on the top of the water to make sure the line doesn’t go down any further. It is best to talk about floats with an expert that can point you in the right direction.

Next, we shall look at hooks. You could start by using types of hook that come already tied onto hooklength. Again, it may be best to talk to a professional or someone in the fishing tackle shop to ensure that you are using the most suitable hook.

There are a few other essential fishing tackle parts that will help, and one of these is called a plummet. This will help you to work out how deep the water is, and therefore point you in the right direction with regards to floats etc. A net is also important to keep the fish you have caught, as is a disgorger which will help you to get the fish off your hook quickly and without any problems. A rod rest will enable you to keep fishing while you are eating, drinking or just popping to the toilet and a small seat will make the overall trip enjoyable. Standing up for hours on end is never much fun!

So, there you have it, the basics to choosing the right fishing tackle. The best thing you can do is to talk to someone in the shop that knows what they are talking about to further assist you in your fishing mission! Just remember to have fun and enjoy it!
