Because of this doctors advise pregnant women to avoid having fish that are high on fat and especially those fish that have other fishes as their diet. The latter kind of fishes also have a longer life span. Thus having these fishes when they are old enough by pregnant ladies increases the chances of higher mercury intake thus affecting the brain cells of both the unborn baby as well as the mother. However, careful consumption of fresh fish and preferably from river water is beneficial both for the mother and the child.

It should not be understood that any kind of fish is healthy. Fish that are imported and are preserved especially should be avoided as they lose most of their nutrients and get transformed into mere rubbers. There is contamination in taste also. Deep sea fishing, sometimes referred to as charter fishing, is one of the most exhilarating angling experiences available. The thrill of landing a cod, haddock or even a shark and then hauling it in is second to none, and will have you coming back time and time again. Deep sea fishing has become hugely popular up and down the coast of Maine, with chartered trips running throughout the summer taking everyone from beginners to seasoned professionals for a taste of the action.

What is Deep Sea Fishing?

As the name suggests, deep sea fishing takes place several miles off coast where the waters are much colder and deeper. Chartered trips can go anywhere from a few miles to seventy miles off coast depending on what species they are targeting and the time of year. Particularly good spots for deep sea fishing include ledges and other obstructions on the seabed which are used as current breakers.

There are several methods employed by deep sea fisherman. Commercially and occasionally on chartered trips, nets are used which allow for large hauls of fish to be caught by trawling over large areas. However, most pleasure trips stick to using heavy duty rods and equipment which allows anglers to target particular species and enjoy the thrill of the fight. Few sights are as breathtaking as a strong, beautiful fish leaping from the water in a bid to break free.

What Fish are on Offer?

There are many species of fish on offer to deep sea anglers, with the majority of chartered trips offering the usual cod, haddock, red hake and red fish. Other popular species on offer include pollock, flounder and red fish, and others may be available depending on where you are fishing and the bait and technique used. You are allowed to keep the fish that you catch as long as they are within state guidelines, and many Guides will only be more than happy to fillet your catches for you if you are on a chartered trip.

Shark fishing is also often associated with deep sea fishing and is often combined during chartered trips. Sharks such as the blue are reasonably abundant off the coast of Maine and can be readily caught using the appropriate techniques, with larger sharks such as porbeagles or makos also found occasionally. These are much larger though, and will require specialist equipment to land successfully.

How Can I Get Started?

If you are lucky enough to own your own boat, then the appropriate licenses and equipment will allow you to head out to sea as and when you wish. However, the majority of deep sea fishing takes place in groups aboard chartered trips led by Captains and Registered Maine Guides. The major advantage of these group trips is that all equipment and necessary licenses are provided for you on the day. Additionally, the cost of these trips is very reasonable, particularly if you go as part of a larger group. No previous fishing experience is required as the Guides will be more than happy to show you the ropes and get you on your way to catching your first big fish.

This is why most experienced fishermen would rather have a night trip than a day trip. However, due to the difference of environment during night fishing, if you are new to this kind of setting, then there are certain things that you should know to make your night trip a successful one.

Getting Started

Although it may seem difficult, waking up in the wee hours of the day is still possible. Additionally, you can always get the help of an alarm clock to be your wake-up call. There are some other preparations too that should be done other than being able to wake up, like preparing your bait.

It would be the best if you have already set up everything you need and have some wet-bait ready even half an hour before sun rise. It is important to remember that anchoring and cooking the bait should be finished by the time sunset arrives. If you really want to have good results at the fastest time possible, whether it be you are fishing in fresh or salt water, try fishing around piers, which have some lights. This is because fish are very attracted to light beams that pass through the water surface in different sea depths. In general, fishing excursions usually have a very happy ending when held around lights on piers or buoys.

Use Something Large

It is also important that you use very large dry or wet flies, nymphs, and oversized streamers, if you are really interested in getting a lot of catch of those active feeders out there.

In fact, night-feeding can be easier for you when your bait is that large enough for the fish to locate. Additionally, you should remember to draw your baits gradually along the surface of the water with a jerking motion. Doing this would help attract some trout. Nevertheless, you should also bring some extra live bait and always keep the lure inside your water or boat, safely contained.

See The Signs

During night fishing, you should always try to be on guard for some signs that feeding fish are in the area. Take note that at this time, you’ll be able to hear them feeding themselves even before you see their splashes or swirls in the water. Don’t forget to chuck in your lure, as soon as possible and once you hear them breaking the surface, into the spot that you think they are in.

It always amazes me that some people continue to fish for tuna. As we all know, this sport is not a cheap one. It costs a ton of money just to put the boat in the water. Tack on the expensive fishing rods, lures, and GPS systems and we are talking about a small fortune. And this is before considering how much time it takes. Before you spend another dime, or waste more of your time trolling around the ocean, try out this one simply tuna fishing technique and you will almost certainly put more tuna in your boat today!

There is nothing like the site of blackfin tuna in a feeding frenzy. I love the way they simply destroy the surface of the water eating anything, and everything, in site. The sound that the surrounding birds make is music to my ears.

But where do you find the elusive fish? How can you increase your chances of having a large school come your way?

The secret is rubbish; trash to be more precise.

Shrimp boats trawl the ocean floors all night and almost immediately begin separating harvested shrimp from the other sea creatures that are scooped up along with the shrimp. I have heard scientist refer to this as ‘bycatch’ but captains simply call it trash, and this trash is how the magic happens.

When the shrimp boats have finished separating their catch, they go ahead and throw the trash overboard. All of this typically catches the attention of predators in the area, who quickly move in to feed upon the tiny fish and crustaceans now floating like perfectly prepared chum.

Enterprising captains know that we are fishing for tuna and will often save a few bags to sell for a few bucks. The key is to buy a few bags so that you can create your own trash feeding frenzy. Once you have your trash in hand, slowly approach the stern of an anchored shrimp boat. You will almost certainly see fish in the area. Once you do, turn off your engine and let some trash fly.

Drop a lot of chum initially to see what is in the water. If you see a bunch of bonitos you may need to consider moving. If, however, you see more blackfin tuna than bonitos slow the rate at which you are chumming to prevent the bonitos from going into a feeding frenzy. Wait until you see a few blackfins circling around, and then cast your line into the water. That is all there is to it!

Harlequin fish or Rasbora Heteromorpha groups come from Thailand, Sumatra, and the Malayas. The fish are smaller breeds, which grow around 1 ¾ inches in size. Harlequin fish is one of the aquarium keeper’s favorites, since the fish have colorful figures. The fish are shaped like wedges, which blue-black shades setoff its rosy pink and violet forms. Harlequin fish are easily trained; as well, the fish do well in communal tanks. The species however are beautiful formed and colored that residing in a sole tank could produce natural effects to your home area. The fish will dine on all foods, and prefers water conditions such as soft water, sensibly acid waters, and peaty waters. Harlequin fish are not much for breeding. The fish pair in well-conditioned waters, or peaty waters. The balance preferred is pH-6, pH-2, or hard water at 40-ppm. Harlequin fish mate while turned upside down at a leaf surface. The fish typically lay less than one hundred eggs, which are fry in one day. The Harlequin fish group is commonly referred to the Red Rasbora fish.

In addition to the Harlequin, is the Cobitidae family. This fish will help keep tanks clean by gnawing at algae. The scavengers are similar to Carps, in that the fish have teeth. This family of fish also has four barbel located in its upper jaw. The fish are akin to any European freshwater Cyprinids. Cyprinids are family to minnows and Carps, which the fish sometimes have round scales, softer fins, and toothless jaws. Spiny Loach is the family of Cobitidae. This fish composes bifid spines, which is located beneath the eyes. The bifid will erect from its folded, flat position if the fish is put to the test. Predatorily fish will not like the results produced by this fish in the event they decide to challenge the Spiny Loach. Spiny Loaches and Cobitidae fish tend to surface often to seek oxygen. The fish prefer to live in murky, mud-spattered waters. The murkiness and mud limits oxygen, which is why the fish surface often. Weather Fish is amongst the group of Spiny Loaches, which this fish will not adapt well to atmospheric situations, which cause stress.

The Loach fish include the group of Acanthophthalmus Semicinctus family. The fish come from the east parts of India and grow up to 3 ½ inches in size. The fish is popularly called the Half Band Coolie. The Coolie fish have bodies shaped like a snake, which the body covers yellow and black marks. You can find the sub-species of the Coolie family in the Kuhlii family. Kuhlii fish tend to fall into the Salmon category, since the fish may have pink bellies, as well as yellow and black marks. Coolie fish are communal tank fish, which have a peaceful nature. The tanks should be limited to plants, since this fish will hide in closed spaces. You should at deposits of compact decomposed organic debris at the bottom of the tank. (Peat) These fish tend to eat Tubifex and algae, which makes the fish a good cleaning system. As well, the fish will eat all foodstuffs. Coolie fish do not place a high demand on water condition, yet they tend to do well in moderate or neutral waters. The water temperature should remain at 78 degrees Fahrenheit.

MBARI researchers Bruce Robison and Kim Reisenbichler used video taken by unmanned, undersea robots called remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to study barreleye fish in the deep waters just offshore of Central California. At depths of 600 to 800 meters (2000 to 2600 feet) below the surface, the ROV cameras typically showed these fish hanging motionless in the water, their eyes glowing a vivid green in the ROV’s bright lights. The ROV video also revealed a previously undescribed feature of these fish–its eyes are surrounded by a transparent, fluid-filled shield that covers the top of the fish’s head.
